Based on historical fact, this novel tells the story of the legendary Edith Cavell, a British nurse whose duties as a healer clashed with the demands of a ruthless occupying regime during World War I. At the request of a brilliant but hot-headed surgeon, Edith went from London to Brussels to create Belgium's first school of nursing. At the height of her success, the German army marched into neutral Belgium and took over her hospital and school. Swept up in the struggle to survive under the repressive and brutal control of the German occupiers, Edith was forced to make a decision when two wounded British soldiers came to her seeking asylum. If she took them in, she would put herself in danger. If she didn't, they would most likely die of infection or by the hands of the Germans. Her decision plunged her into the dangerous and clandestine world of the Belgian underground, where she became an important link in the rescue of Allied soldiers. For nine months, this quiet, religious nurse, went about saving over a thousand soldiers under the very noses of the German command. What happened next is both shocking and suspenseful. It caused a worldwide outrage, shaped American public attitudes of the war, and rocked the German government. Edith Cavell's story is about the profession of nursing, the brutality of war, and the risks of commitment. It is a testament to one woman's courage, resilience, intelligence, and determination to make some sense out of the violence of war. "Patriotism is not enough," said Edith.

I am almost done. I heard her newest version published by Henschel Haus is much better. I got it from the last publisher Beagle Books Publisher, who is no longer publishing the book. Go with the new one. This book is worth reading. Ashamed to say, I never heard of this nurse. It's amazing what people in our world do for humanity and we miss it. I can't but the book down.

Fatal Decision Edith Cavell Wwi Nurse Terri Arthur 9780984181322 Books Reviews
Great book. I am a nurse but you do not have to be to enjoy this book. A brave, courageous woman.
What a marvelous book! In Nursing School (BCH) we never read about Edith Cavell...only famous American nurses.
I am passing the book around to my nurse friends, who are also intrigued by such an awe-inspiring nurse.
Thank you, Terri.
excellent. Re Vanya. I never received it. Not sure if I got a refund.
A phenomenal book. I think any nurse/teacher/social worker, etc.. would thoroughly enjoy reading this book. It is well written and flows very well. It really forces you to reflect on why people do the things they do.
Very well written and it turned me on to this uncelebrated nurse and Humanitarian. Edith exhibited enormous bravery and toughness in the face of death. There should be a commerative day for this brave lady.
This book was recommended as a great read on one of the nursing websites I subscribe to, so I decided to pick it up to read on vacation. I was not disappointed. I was surprised to not have heard of this woman before in nursing school or any nursing circles. Her dedication and contributions to nursing, as a true professional until the end of her career (and eventually, her life) were incredible. Her greatest contribution to humanity took place in Belgium during WW1. The historical aspects of this book combined with an amazing life, for me, was a perfect read. It contains some history of the development of nursing, as well as some events of WW1. The book is not difficult to get through; it was very well-written. I would recommend this book to any nurse or nursing student.
I am so grateful my book club chose this book as I had never heard of this remarkable women's story. The historical facts cover during this book were very in lightening and moving. Given her privileged back grown, she could have chosen many different and simpler paths in her life, but her will and integrity would not allow it, and because of her, many, many lives were spared. There were times that the pace of the book were slow, but the courage and strength she displayed made me persevere to the end. Thanks to Terri Arthur for her perseverance too, in bring this true hero's life to light!!! I have recommend this book to other book clubs, and they have all been very grateful as well.
