There's a reason why Olivia Gates is one of my favourite authors and this book is just another one of them.This story takes us into the world of Mohab and Jala and brings its into a love so strong that neither a family feud nor time can diminish it.
I always fall in love with Olivia's heros. They're so delicious! And her heroines are always so strong and loveable and Jala is no exception. Even after a somewhat difficult life she still has dignity and strength.
A fabulous read and I recommend it to all lovers of romance!

Anyone who enjoys the short story form should love this collection. Wide ranging and varied, there is something here for almost everyone. It's hard to know where to begin. There are poignant scenes of childhood. Humorous tales of misadventure. What it's like growing up gay in the 14th century. And there are various styles of writing all from the same author. Tru North is an example of an almost surrealistic look at a man's disintegration. For me this is a perfect beside table read. One story before going to sleep and I have a whole month's worth of reading.
This collection of short stories are great! they take you back to times in your life that make you laugh, I mean they are so relatable that you find yourself chuckling as you remember things you may have said or done. One particular story shares in an insightful way what it would have been like to be gay in another time period. It seems that most of the things that are being dealt with today has been around for centuries. This is the sort of book you could read before bedtime and still have pleasant dreams.
I adore Jon McDonald's short stories. By far they are the best short stories to read in my opinion. Gotta Dance with the One Who Brung Ya is no exception.
Honestly it's hard to explain these short stories, But I assure you that McDonald has made sure there is something for everyone in this collection.

I am giving this book 5 stars! It was truly amazing to read on this quite fall afternoon!
Jon McDonald has taken stories that seem unrelated and made them into a book that is as relevant as it is funny. For instance "why you should brush teeth" is a play on the saying by mothers about wearing clean underwear, you never know what may happen, who you may meet and as you grow older who might get to see them. This poor woman forgets to brush her teeth and her day turns into one of those days that drive a person insane.
He has something for everyone gay and straight alike. Life is the Dance and there will be many partners and many tunes it is how you navigate the dance floor that is important. This is a great book for those times when you feel life is just picking on you.
Gotta Dance with the One Who Brung Ya by Jon McDonald is a collection of short stories focusing on a lot of different factors in people's lives, most coming from the gay perspective. Coming-of-age stories, and relationship issues are prevalent in the stories, which are really well done. Some are a little more strange and unique, such as a man trying to grow up as a gay man in the 14th century.
ONE really good short story is difficult to write, but Jon manages to do just that, but like 30 times, or so. Each story does a really good job at setting up characters and situations quick enough to get the story moving, but none of them never really feel that rushed.
I believe this book does a very good job of showing that people aren't as different as some people try to make you believe. Everyone has similar problems and issues in life. Whether they are about growing up "different", and feeling like an "outcast, or relationship struggles, it doesn't matter who or what you are, everyone goes through them.
So when you think you are outcast for who and what you are, just remember
You're not special or unique, in any way.
....whoa, that turned into a bummer ending, right?
